EXCLUSIVE: Metro…In Dino director Anurag Basu doesn't want to return to horror despite it being the flavour of the season: "I was labelled as 'HORROR KING' because all horror TV shows were directed by me but…" https://ift.tt/hTHAFvk

Anurag Basu’s Metro…In Dino has trended well at the box office thanks to a positive word of mouth, performance and music. Over the years, the filmmaker has become known for films on relationships and human drama. However, there was a time when he specialized in making horror content. His first film as a full-fledged director, Saaya (2003), starring John Abraham and Tara Sharma, also had a supernatural touch. Ghost-related films then were scary but this one was not and hence was a fresh film for the time.

Horror is now the flavour of the season. Hence, would Anurag Basu like to go back to his roots? Bollywood Hungama exclusively asked him this question and he replied, “There was a time when I used to do only horror on television. I was labelled as ‘horror king’ because all horror shows were directed by me (smiles). I got tired of it as I had attempted it all in this genre. When I started directing for the big screen, I was quite exhausted with it and decided to (do it later).”

Anurag Basu continued, “However, I used to enjoy doing horror on television. In fact, I got my first film due to my TV show ‘Ajeeb Dastaan’. Bhatt saab (Mahesh Bhatt) used to love that show and that’s how he offered me the film.”

Anurag Basu, anyway, is not known for chasing formulas. In Metro…In Dino, Aditya Roy Kapur’s character describes Cheese Chinese Scezwan Masala Dosa as ‘Saala Chennai se China, sab cover kar liya lekin raha kahin ka nahin’. This is also true for many of our films that try to incorporate a lot of elements to appeal to a wider audience. Ultimately, the film doesn’t appeal to either the masses or the classes.

This mantra is followed by Anurag Basu personally as well since his films might be unconventional but work well with the target urban audience. He smiled when we made this observation and he said, “Yes, that’s a key thing. A film works only when it's authentic. It doesn’t matter which genre it belongs to – romantic, action, thriller - but what’s important is that the director tells the story honestly.”

Lastly, Metro…In Dino is not the only release for Anurag Basu in 2025. On Diwali, he’ll come up with his untitled next with Kartik Aaryan and Sreeleela. When asked how the film was shaping up, he replied, “It’s going great. That’s also the reason that I am taking a break so that I can jump into it immediately. We are starting the next schedule very soon.”
