Dynamic pricing effect: Cinepolis sells regular class seats of Stree 2 for a RECORD Rs. 900 and Rs. 1000; post-midnight shows make a COMEBACK thanks to Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor starrer https://ift.tt/k7wHhES

The Rajkummar Rao-Shraddha Kapoor starrer Stree 2 has astonished the industry and trade as it opened at Rs. 44 crores plus, more than what the expectations were. The film was working across the country – from tier 1 to tier 2 and 3 centres and from single screens to multiplexes. Realizing that there was a demand, the exhibitors opted for blockbuster pricing. However, with the implementation of dynamic pricing, the ticket prices in certain cinemas went up the roof.

Yesterday, Cinepolis theatres in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region set a record by selling regular seats (the ones not included in the recliner, gold class or any special formats category) for Rs. 800, Rs. 900 and even Rs. 1000. The Premium class tickets for the 8:25 pm show of Cinepolis Andheri on August 15 were priced at Rs. 900 while the executive class seats were priced at Rs. 800 around 4 hours before the show. These tickets were initially available in the range of Rs. 300 and 400. As for the 11:59 PM show, the ticket rates touched Rs. 1000 for the platinum category.

In Cinepolis Seawoods, Navi Mumbai, the prices for the 10:40 pm show were Rs. 800 for the normal class, Rs. 900 for the executive class and Rs. 1000 for the premium class. Stree 2 was played in the IMAX screen where the rates are usually higher than the normal screen. But yesterday, there was no such difference. The tickets for the 10:55 pm show in the IMAX screen of Stree 2 in this multiplex were available for Rs. 900 (normal), Rs. 950 (executive) and Rs. 1000 (premium).

In the past, Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report that Oppenheimer’s tickets were sold at a whopping Rs. 2450. But those were for the IMAX screens. Stree 2 is probably the first instance where regular seats are available for a four-digit figure.

Explaining how dynamic pricing works, a multiplex official told Bollywood Hungama, “It’s similar to what happens when you book air tickets. The earlier you book, the better deal you get. The same happens now with film tickets as well.”

A trade expert, however, felt that all lines had been crossed for Stree 2’s pricing at Cinepolis, “I can understand if the ticket, originally priced for Rs. 400, is being sold for Rs. 500 or even Rs. 600. But to price them at more than double the original rate is a bit too much.”

The multiplex official, however, reasoned, “Despite the jump in the prices, the shows at Cinepolis Andheri and Seawoods were sold out. Hence, this shows that people don’t mind paying the said amount.”

Meanwhile, Stree 2 is expected to rock the show on Friday, August 16 as well despite it being just a partial holiday. The collections would see a jump once again over the weekend. As it happens with blockbuster films, 1 am and 2 am shows will be played for Stree 2. As of August 16 morning, the newly built PVR Lido, Mumbai is the only cinema hall that has opened bookings for the 1:30 am show on August 17. The other theatres are expected to follow suit.
