Adhyayan Suman is on the cusp of a major comeback with his role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's upcoming period drama, Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. The series is set to premiere on Netflix on May 1st, and Suman's excitement is palpable. He recently shared a heartfelt social media post expressing his deep emotions about the project, which included a photo of him alongside Bhansali and his father, veteran actor Shekhar Suman, at the show's premiere.
Suman's journey to Heeramandi wasn't without its challenges. After debuting as an actor years ago, he faced a period of no work. However, Heeramandi marks a potential turning point. Speaking on Siddharth Kannan's YouTube channel, Suman revealed a touching anecdote. He shared how director Sanjay Leela Bhansali was moved to tears after witnessing Adhyayan Suman deliver a powerful five-minute monologue during filming. “On the first day, I was giving cues to Manisha Koirala. You can’t understand Bhansali’s sharpness. He heard my delivery in Urdu, and he looked at me and said, ‘Your dad taught you, didn’t he?'” he said.
Shekhar Suman then said, “He had a five-minute long take. Five minutes. This must be a first in the history of Bhansali Productions, but Adhyayan nailed it in one go. He got up from his chair, okayed the shot, and hugged Adhyayan with tears in his eyes. The next thing I know, I get a call from him and he says, ‘Where was this boy all this time?'” Shekhar said, as he cried.
Adhyayan continued, “When I was doing that scene, I swear on my career, I felt my dad’s spirit had taken control of me. I felt if I don’t deliver in that moment, it was game over. I felt that he was inside me. And that’s when sir got up and cried and kissed my hand. It went silent for five minutes, and then the entire set of 500 people clapped. My entire life flashed in front of me. All my pain, all my struggle, it came to me.”
Bhansali is venturing into the digital world for the first time with Heeramandi. The series is set against the backdrop of the 1940s and promises an epic narrative of love, power, and freedom. The series stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, Sanjeeda Sheikh and Sharmin Segal.
