Filmmaker Karan Johar is back on the coffee couch! Season 7 of Koffee With Karan which premiered on Disney+ Hotstar with Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani co-stars Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt. The next two episodes saw the pairings of Janhvi Kapoor-Sara Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar-Samantha Ruth Prabhu. Prior to series premiere, the filmmaker spoke at length about his love for cinema.

“I grew up watching that cinema that was larger-than-life, hugely entertaining. It was full commercial, over the top, melodrama, gaane hain, dances hain, woh mere liye Hindi cinema tha aur hamesha rahega. Ofcourse, har kisam ki cinema banni chahiye, bahut saare audiences hain humare desh main. Some want to watch something very cerebral, very parallel, and very alternate in its syntax. Somebody wants to watch like all the great glory of Indian cinema,” the filmmaker told Bollywood Hungama.

“When I see the big event films and you know love stories with songs and dances, it all makes me happy because that's where my love for cinema began,” he added.

Revealing how he fell in love with cinema, the filmmaker said, “I didn't fall in love with cinema watching like a Spielberg film. I mean, he's a genius and the world applauds him, I fell in love watching a Yash Chopra song. So that is the truth and I cannot deny that I can't lie and say that, you know, oh, when I mentioned names, I'm gonna say Francis Ford Coppola, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, James Cameron.”

“All these big names, legendary names, they're all geniuses. But yaar, I got so much happiness in my childhood dancing to a Yash Chopra song, to a song Raj Kapoor song to, watching like actors do what they did in that time. So that's what always gave me joy. And I don't want that that child in me that grew up on that cinema to ever die. Because that's what brought me to this business in the first place.”

The new season of Koffee with Karan will see Kriti Sanon, Tiger Shroff, Shahid Kapoor, Kiara Advani, Ananya Panday, Vijay Deverakonda, Anil Kapoor, and Varun Dhawan as guests. Sidharth Malhotra, Vicky Kaushal, Gauri Khan, Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan, Maheep Kapoor, and Bhavana Pandey are also expected to appear. Karan Johar has also sent invites to Sanjay Leela Bhansali and SS Rajamouli.
