After winning hearts in Happiness and My Name, respectively, South Korean actors Park Hyung Sik and Han So Hee are back with limited series drama Soundtrack #1. They star in a slice-of-life heart-warming tale. He is starring as Han Sun Woo in the Disney+ drama opposite actress Han So Hee essaying the role of Lee Eun Soo. The 4-episode drama premiered on March 23, 2022. The first episode clocked 43 minutes giving cozy wintery vibes. [SPOILERS AHEAD].
The episode begins with Lee Eun Soo getting her photograph clicked from Han Sun Woo. The two have been friends for 19 years and know everything about each other. The audience is also introduced to other supporting characters. Han Sun Woo is a budding photographer whereas Lee Eun Soo is a lyricist. She has written lyrics for several artists but is yet to find a name for herself in the industry. Han Sun Woo is about to host an exhibition of his photos, but he feels that all of it is a lie and decides to postpone it.
After the lyrics get rejected one more time, Lee Eun Soo goes on a drinking spree. Like a loyal friend Han Sun Woo is there for her. The two have a talk about one-sided love which is also the theme of her rejected lyrics. He says something quite meaningful, and she is surprised to find him so knowledgeable on the topic. She asks him to stay with her for two weeks so that she can find inspiration from him and complete the task. He is about to leave Korea again after two weeks, and she has two weeks’ time to re-write the lyrics. He agrees to live with her for two weeks, saying that his manager’s girlfriend moved in for two weeks and he has nowhere to go plus he can also assist her in writing the lyrics. The two get to cleaning Eun Soo’s home.
In a flashback scene from four years ago, Sun Woo comes second at a photography competition. The conversation shifts to dating and men. When Mari tells Eun Soo to date Sun Woo, Eun Soo says she won’t date him because if they break up then they cannot be friends anymore. On the same say, Sun Woo had decided to confess to Eun Soo, but listening to Eun Soo, he decides to not go ahead with the plan.
The first episode put out starter marks for the story. Park Hyung Sik as Han Sun Woo is a charming character. His eyes alone are emotive enough for the audience to know that he is in love with Cha Eun Soo. Han So Hee as Lee Eun Soo is a bubbly and cheerful character. While Sun Woo is a man of few words, Eun Soo is an open book who speaks her heart out. The two stars bring on this heart-fluttering chemistry and complement each other beautifully. They carry out their roles with an ease and comfort that every scene feels quite natural. Han So Hee, whom we have seen in Nevertheless and My Name shows a new side, was Cha Eun Soo whereas Hyung Sik continues to add more nuance to his skills picking roles that have shades to showcase more of his abilities.
The music accompanying each scene is soft and somber, tinged with sadness. The remaining three episodes will further tell the story of Eun Soo and Sun Woo as they spend two weeks together and address the matters of the heart that have been left unasked and unanswered for years. The show makers have used the setting of a winter season to show the leads’ story. Winter season is synonymous with love and heartbreak. For a story that tells a tale of both, the choice is apt.
The episode is just 43 minutes long, but does not feel dragged out. Watching the interactions and the chemistry between the leads warms one’s heart. It does prepare one for heartbreak, but then again what good is heartbreak story without a huge dose of ‘what ifs’?
